Western Australia Annexes Tasmania

Colin Barnett

Canberra has issued West Australian Premier Colin Barnett an ultimatum to withdraw West Australian police from Hobart within 48 hours. The move comes after Western Australia annexed Tasmania in the early hours of this morning. The act of aggression follows weeks of posturing by the federal government and the states over GST redistribution, with WA vowing to turn Tasmania into a tributary state if their demands are not met.

In a national security address given in Canberra today, the Prime Minister, flanked by 14 Australian flags, called for calm from the Tasmanian people and foreshadowed a confrontation with the West Australian leader. “I will shirt front Premier Barnett, you bet you are, you bet I will” said the Prime Minister.

The Minister for Defence Kevin Andrews is coordinating a rapid response force for deployment in the event that WA does not withdraw forces within the allotted timeframe. In an interview with The (un)Australian, Mr Andrews said he would be holding talks with the West Australian leadership group and hoped to resolve the crisis peacefully. Despite this, the government will be stationing precautionary defence units outside of all South Australian uranium mines.

When asked who the West Australian leader is, the minister told The (un)Australian that there was a “cadre of leaders” and that he wasn’t preferred to discuss operational matters any further.
