Wentworth Residents Hold Vigil For Malcolm

Residents of Malcolm Turnbull’s Wentworth electorate are in their seventh night of a staged protest outside the Prime Ministers residence, Kiribilli House.

The candle-light vigil has been running every night for nearly a week in Sydney’s Northern suburbs, since the outcome of last weeks Liberal party leadership spill.

While the group of Malcolm Turnbull devotees at this peaceful protest remains small, the sentiment among these voters is strong.

“We must get rid of Tony Abbott,” says Protest leader of the group, Trisha Edwards, 62, from Vaucluse.

The interiors shop owner, said she just couldn’t stand by to see “Her Malcy lose to a man clearly not fit for the job.”

“I mean really it’s just ridiculous,” she said. “Malcy is clean, articulate and such a supporter of the arts – he’s just what this country needs.”

Inspired by her son Patrick, 22, socialist and Student Representative Council President at The University of Sydney – Trisha decided to take matters into her own hands.

“I thought this has to stop, Tony Abbott cannot remain leader of this country,” she said.

“So I gathered together all my scented candles, some brie, a bag of muscatels and bottle of Pinot and headed to the gates of Kiribilli House.

“I’m not leaving until they get rid of Abbott I told David…he’s my husband.”

Every night Trisha comes back to the gates at 7pm, after her personal training session, remaining there till 1am the next day.

Chris Whiteman, 71, retired, is one of the protesters and says he regrets voting for Mr Abbott in the first place but didn’t know what else to do.

“I’ve voted Liberal my whole life,” he said. “You can’t just change things all of a sudden to suit yourself, you’ve got to think long term.”
