Former Federal Opposition Leader Mark Latham will go toe to toe with notorious BBC Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson in a charity boxing match in Sydney to be held next month. The announcement comes following Clarkson’s sacking from the BBC over instigating a fracas on the set of Top Gear.
“We’re going to give the people a real show”, Latham told The (un)Australian when asked if he and Clarkson would actually attempt to harm their opponent. “It’s not just going to be a recreational spar, these people have come to watch blokes hit each other so that’s what I’m going to do. If Jeremy doesn’t hit back, that’s unfortunate for him I suppose.”
All proceeds from the fight will go to Invisible Children, the organisation behind the universally lauded Kony 2012 campaign. In a press release Latham expressed his belief that with the money raised from the fight they would finally be able to stop Lord’s Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony once and for all.
Sportsbet currently has Latham as the hot favourite paying only 1.20 while a Clarkson victory is paying 3.30 but market expert Tom Waterhouse says he expects it to be a close fight.
“Clearly on paper Latham is the better fighter,” said Waterhouse. “But Clarkson is going to fast for four whole hours before the fight and we know from recent history that when that happens anything can happen.”
The winner of the bout will go on to fight Vladmir Putin is Moscow in two weeks’ time.
