The social media department of the Queensland Police Service has won The Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Open Mic Comedy Competition.

The annual contest has launched the careers of many household names including Josh Thomas, Hannah Gadsby and that guy who looks really familiar, you know, he was on that thing, with the weird one. No, weirder. Yeah, with the… you know? No! Yes! That one! Him!

The paramilitary organisation’s SEO expert Laura Norder, told The unAustralian, “We weren’t sure how Melbourne audiences would take us at first.” The Queensland Police Service has historically been better known to Indigenous communities and people who wore assessments of Campbell Newman’s IQ on t-shirts. “We had tasers just in case, but fortunately our funny tweets were enough to have them writhing on the floor no fewer than twenty-eight times. For up to five minutes!”

Winners of RAW Comedy receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Scotland and the opportunity to perform in the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. “We probably would’ve gone anyway,” say the fledgling funsters “but its nice to know our parent company Santos won’t have to fork out as much”.

An interview on Triple J’s breakfast show is also traditional for prize-winners, but The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (the union representing ABC presenters), warns it will not allow a QPS appearance to go ahead unless the ABC guarantees the safety of its breakfast cohost Matt Okine.
