Marvel’s latest big screen adaptation of a comic book hero, Ant-Man, has achieved top spot in its box office takings despite being really, really dumb.
Marvel continues to be a juggernaut of box office with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Guardians of The Galaxy and The Avengers all plucked from pop-cultural obscurity and thrust into the mainstream with astonishing success.
The most recent triumph, Ant-Man which grossed about US$58 million in its opening weekend, has proven that even the dumbest concept will work once people see that Marvel sticker slapped on it.
The decision to produce a movie based on the most obscure character from the Marvel universe yet, raised a few eyebrows in Hollywood. Industry analyst Greg Bentstrom told The (un)Australian, “When I first hear they were doing Ant-Man, I thought it sounded really idiotic.
“I mean, I like imaginative stories but a hero that’s ‘thing’ is being small, who wants to see small stuff, we want to see big things smashing and exploding. A little dude running around on people’s bodies… that’s not sexy, it’s creepy.”
The (un)Australian approached Marvel executives for comment, one executive went on the record, saying, “HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.”
He also had a large sack of cash slung over his shoulder and was heading in the direction of a bank.
