Prime Minister Tony Abbott has promised to consult more widely before awarding any future knighthoods during a media conference announcing the establishment of an advisory panel on violence against women.
The Prime Minister stood by his decision, but accepted that there were people disappointed by his actions when questioned by journalists, shining a spotlight on the often ignored topic of knighting people.
Announcing that the panel would include famed campaigner against domestic violence and 2015’s Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, the press conference is already receiving positive responses from some of Australia’s leading knighting organisations.
“It’s about time the issue received real media attention” said Darren Snyder, spokesperson for Action NOW, a knighting victims’ advocacy group.
“Knighting blunders number almost 1 a year, affecting thousands of Australian families.”
The man who repealed the carbon tax, promoted an aggressive detention policy against asylum seekers and has failed to get key budget measures passed, has managed to spoil that good will by upsetting voters through his knighting of Prince Philip. The action has left the media speculating if he’ll even be in the leadership role come the next election. In an editorial, former Abbott ally the Courier Mail, called for fresh blood;
“This is no longer the same man who tried to end universal healthcare. By knighting Prince Philip, Abbott has proven he’s no longer fit to be leader of this country.”
While announcing that the issue of domestic violence will be put on the agenda for the Council of Australian Government, Mr Abbott briefly ignored the central issue of knighting Prince Philip to mention why he’s personally concerned about domestic violence.
“I’m the father of three daughters and the brother of three sisters,” Mr Abbott said.
“Since we can’t force men to have female relatives, this panel is the next best thing to help men to see women as human.”
