United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has announced a ballot for the leadership of the United Nations following weeks of mounting speculation about a challenge from former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Last Thursday, reports appeared in Fairfax papers that Mr Rudd was campaigning for Secretary-General’s job. By Friday, the rumours were all but confirmed as the former prime minister told media reporters that Ban Ki-Moon “has my full support.” Adding “I’m a happy little Vegemite here at Harvard.”
In a brief statement, Ki-Moon told the press: “I have formed the view that we need a leadership ballot in order to settle the leadership issue once and for all.”
The (un)Australian understands that as Secretary Ki-Moon still enjoys the support of upwards of 70% of the United Nations General Assembly, despite growing concerns about his low levels of support in Queensland and Western Sydney.
