The prime minister Tony Abbott has appeared on the front cover of Zoo magazine. In a move widely interpreted as a retaliation to Malcolm Turnbull’s recent appearance in GQ magazine, the Prime Minister posed for the photo shoot in one of his signature blue ties and provided an in depth interview with Zoo magazine’s chief political correspondent, Nugget Bronson.
Supporters of the Prime Minister are hailing the manoeuvre as a tactical master-stroke, certain to shore up the Prime Ministers support among the conservative base of the party.
“Tony’s seized the initiative, said one government backbencher. “I couldn’t have come up with a better plan in a million years. The only thing missing was maybe an Australian flag cape and possibly one of his daughters.”
But another supporter of Mr Abbott’s supporters fears the photo shoot will only serve to heighten underlying leadership tensions.
“When Malcolm did his silly photo shoot we all thought it was pretty desperate to be honest, but now Tony’s done one it’s become a legitimate form of leadership positioning. Now Scott Morrison has gone and booked himself in for Regatta Australia while Wyatt Roy is appearing on the cover of the next edition of K-Zone. Where’s it going to end?”
Clive Palmer declined to appear on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens.
