Minister for Education Christopher Pyne has struck out at a recent rise in course fees at the University of Adelaide. In an online petition, he states that the increases are an “unfair attack on people who might by registered in my seat”

 “This university has been producing esteemed alumni of the highest quality for many years. In fact, graduates have made up 6 of the top 10 donors to my last campaign.” 

Mr Pyne has dismissed suggestions that his own higher education deregulation policy has caused the university to rise it’s fees. The member for Sturt has said any increase in fees should be felt by students in the bigger capital cities, like Tanya Plibersek’s electorate of Sydney for example.

 Mr Pyne stressed that we need to be thinking about these students to help secure a prosperous future.

“If these young school leavers can’t afford university they will need to look for other careers in a trade or the manufacturing sector, which would be a really unfortunate outcome. These sorts of jobs are heavily unionised and always vote Labor, it would kill my primary vote in Sturt.”
