The federal government’s controversial education reviewer, Dr Kevin Donnelly has recommended all schoolchildren be caged as part of a wide-ranging review of discipline in the nation’s public schools.
The former teacher and ex-Liberal party staffer says incarceration needs to be used “more effectively” as a way to counter the critical thinking, creativity and other less insidious forms of disobedience running rampant in a system that has lurched to the “cultural left”.
Dr Donnelly contrasted cages with “time out” zones which he said do not work because children can relax and avoid class work.
The co-author of the Federal Government’s 2014 review into the curriculum said schools in Canberra are “on the right track” but said singling out students with autism is “reverse-ableism”.
The Australian Education Union CEO Angelo Gavrielatos said the organisation’s members were enjoying their Easter holidays at present but once they’d finished relaxing and decided which day would be most inconvenient for parents to hold their next staff development day, they would form a committee to compose a full response.
Some teachers have privately told The (un)Australian they’re not opposed to cages in principle but would prefer their use was not limited to students. Many educators dream of being able to cage parents – especially in the lead-up to Parent-Teacher Night.
The federal education minister, Christopher Pyne is yet to formally respond to the recommendations, telling The (un)Australian he wants it to be a surprise for us.
