Neurosurgeon Dr. Muresh Gupta has followed the trend of other highly skilled medical professionals and has begun selling neurosurgery direct to his patients.
By selling intricate and invasive brain operations for $5 a pop directly from his website www.IAmMureshGupta.com, Gupta says he is effectively cutting out the “middle man” (hospitals), and in turn reducing the incentive for patients to pirate surgeries.
Research has shown that when cranial surgery is made available to patients via an easy to use and “hassle free” subscription model, they are far less likely to engage in piracy. Dr. Gupta says, “for too long the hospitals and medical boards have been the unchallenged gatekeepers of the industry”. When pressed on how much money he has made out of the venture Gupta was coy, but quipped, “put it this way, it’s keeping me in scalpels”.
Gupta recently outlined an ambitious plan to throw out all his medical knowledge at the beginning of each year and start from scratch. Colleague Dr. Irving Sheck says of Gupta, “he is renowned for his unique ability to learn new techniques and incisions simply by riffing out of medical journals live in the operating theatre”.ery,
