Strolling trombonist Matt Storch is bracing himself for a heavy workload in January after his band of wandering horn players were booked solidly all through December playing Christmas carols in shopping malls.
“December was just unbelievable. We’ve never had so many gigs,” said an elated Storch as he and his trumpet, tuba and saxophone playing friends marched through Westfield Parramatta playing Good King Wenceslas. “I’ve already gone out and ordered myself a gold plated trombone based on the huge amount of gigs I’m expecting to get in January.”
However, Storch has been warned not to get too excited by the leader of Australia’s premier German oompah band.
“We thought November was going to be our best month ever after we had such a fantastic October,” lamented Gustav Klink, piano accordianist from Gustav’s Good Time Beer Tent Balladeers. “I went and bought a brand new pair of lederhosen and hired ten extra slap dancers but come November 1st my phone went silent. For some reason the demand for German oompah bands suddenly dried up.”
