Confusion is rife within the Liberal Party over rumours that Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull is preparing to announce his candidacy in the Manly Dam Spill. Turnbull has previously indicated that were a spill motion to pass, it would not be conducive to disloyal behaviour for any member of the cabinet to contest the spill, a statement widely interpreted as an indicator that he would be a candidate in a leadership ballot.
However recent weather events in Sydney appear to have caught Turnbull unprepared, with several of his Sydney-based supporters delayed by the very weather conditions which brought on the spill in the first place.
But one cabinet minister who is a close supporter of the Prime Minister insists the Communications Minister has no choice but to challenge. “Malcolm has indicated he would challenge if there was a spill, if he ducks the fight again because of weather –which is meant to be his strong point at any rate — he will have no choice but to renounce all future leadership aspirations, and retire at the next election.”
In a short statement Mr Turnbull declared “The Prime Minister has my full support.”
