Following the Liberal Party voting down by 61 votes to 39 the chance to replace Tony Abbott as Prime Minister, Bill Shorten’s Labor party has today ordered 61 balloon bouquets to be sent to their Liberal party counterparts.
The gifting of the balloon bouquets is not without precedent. During the period of the Howard government the Liberal party was known to send balloon bouquets every time the ALP installed Kim Beazley as leader.
Long term Liberal MP, Phillip Ruddock reflected on the bizarre ritual telling The (un)Australian, “It started in the 80’s when we first bought back Peacock and Bob Hawke shouted the Liberal party room a keg of beer, we returned the favour when Beazley got elected by sending balloon bouquets and the tradition continued except of course for when they elected Mark Latham for that one we sent them all gold watches.”
