Terror Suspect’s Video Gets Shortlisted For Tropfest

A short video made by Sydney terror suspects Umar Al-Kutobi and Mohammad Kiad has won praise from Tropfest organiser John Polson after making it into the final 16 of the world most prestigious short film festival.

“This year’s signature item is ‘Chop’ and the two film-makers have shown great creativity in working the concept into their narrative”, said Polson from the roped off VIP section of the Domain. “There is a great Tarantinoesque combination of comedy and violence in the scene where the protagonist is kneeling before an Islamic State flag threatening to behead a random white person.”

“My prime motivation is to avenge the deaths of thousands of innocent Muslim children, to goad young believers out of their state of apathy and to win the $10,000 worth of editing suite time,” said Al-Kutobi from his maximum security cell. “Plus you never know, my film may catch the eye of a Hollywood producer and I might get asked to direct the next Batman movie.”

Critics are divided over the film with David Stratton calling it a powerful treatise on the alienation of the individual in modern society, while Margaret Pomeranz has called it a tacky and derivative riff on the works of master Afghani auteur Osama Bin Laden.
