The Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has responded to an interview on the ABC on Tuesday night in which Australian defence minister Kevin Andrews seemed to have forgotten the Islamic State leaders name, saying: “I’m offended Mr Andrews forgot my name, I have played golf with the defence minister many times, he will not be getting a card from me this Christmas.”
In the interview, which aired on ABC’s 7:30 Report, Mr Andrews was asked four times by host Leigh Sales who the leader of Islamic State was. He avoided the question on each occasion, unable to recall he name Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
It was an embarrassing gaffe for the government as Mr Andrews and Prime Minister Tony Abbott had just announced 330 Australian troops would leave this week for Iraq to train local forces in the fight against Islamic State.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi went on to say: “My three wives are also very upset, we were going to invite the Andrews family to our summer house in Majorca. I doubt that will be happening now.”
