A senior Liberal MP has described the relationship between Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop as “toxic and untenable” after Ms Bishop unveiled the latest in her trademark range of designer Emoji.
After days of speculation about a potential challenge to Mr Abbott’s leadership, Ms Bishop tweeted an Emoji comprised of a graphic conveying two words in Navy Blue Britannica Bold font “It’s On!” The Emoji is being interpreted as a call to arms to Bishop’s supporters, one of whom, Senator David Johnston who was recently demoted by Prime Minister Abbott retweeted Ms Bishop within five minutes, before changing his profile display picture to the “It’s On” Emoji.
This latest development appears certain to bring the leadership tensions to a showdown in what will be the first ever leadership contest conducted by Emoji.
This is not the first time Minister Bishop has come under fire for her use of Emoji. In December The (un) Australian reported that Ms Bishop had inadvertently bound Australia to a carbon emissions reduction target when she accidentally sent a thumbs up Emojii to US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Speaking to The (un) Australian former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd expressed dismay at what he described as the “undignified leadership turbulence” within the Liberal Party.
